A unique strength of the historic and beautiful island of North Cyprus, it’s her accommodation and real estate sector.
The hearts of the cities are embellished with completed and about to be completed buildings habouring luxurious features that include roof top swimming pools. These however, aren’t only found in cities, as superbly stylish apartments are almost everywhere, especially in student infested zones. It’s true everything luxury is association with high prices which often times isn’t at the reach of most students. However, don’t be scared! The main focus of this write-up is to give a vivid picture of the accommodation sector in North Cyprus and as well help you make the right choice which suits your need and budget.
As a foreign student in North Cyprus, they are three choices; university dormitories, private dorms and rented houses, from which a student can choose. Living in the dorms or rented houses has differences which typically depend on a whole lot of things, as discussed below.
To begin, university dormitories supply the basic needs of students and are clean and comfortable. Besides this, they have as main advantage of been on campus or some minutes away from campus that are facilitated by every hour bus shuttles. Usually, students will have to follow a set of rules set by the management. This is to ensure their safety and comfort, as well as a smooth stay for brilliant studies and results.
In relation to private dorms, these are the most expensive among the three categories of accommodation. There are many newly built luxury dormitories with modern pleasing deco and excellent services for comfort. Most are similar to five-star hotels in that they offer cleaning, cooking and launderette services, internet, flat screen TV, telephone, air-conditioning and kitchenette with hob, kettle, microwave oven and mini fridge facilities. Some may even have a swimming pool, cafeteria and bus services. Expect to pay between 200 to 500 pounds per month for a room here, depending on the location and services available.
Lastly, pertaining to rented houses, most apartments (especially the newly built) are comfortable with modern pleasing deco and furniture. They are segmented and commonly referred to as 1 + 1 (room and living room), 2 + 1 (rooms and a living room) 3 or even 4 + 1 (rooms and a living room). Living in such apartments are quite fun as you’ll make new friends and family with other internationals. Customarily, contracts are made for a year and the landlords will want two months rents and deposits which are equivalent to the amounts of the rents. These amounts could be paid annually, in six-month, three or two month’s installments. Some landlords even accept monthly payments, but the qualities of these types of apartments are questionable.
To round off, do pay keen attention to these advises. There are many agencies and estates specialized in student accommodation. So, as a new student, it’s important to work closely with your recruiting university in order to avoid unforeseen complications. Please, be informed that you will need to pay a commission of one months’ rent (and/or additional fees) if you decide to rent through them. Equally, look for apartments that are close to university bus stops, markets, café and restaurants.
